The Priory site is enclosed by a fence. It can be visited on during the Open Afternoons. Tours will start between 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm, and the site will be open until 4:00 pm. Adults £2, children free. (For organized visits at other times please contact Mrs Hilary Black 01273 471930.)
Lewes Priory Trust are holding our annual Open Afternoon on June 7th this year from 1.45pm until 4.00pm.
The tours of this very important ancient site are by experienced experts, and tell of the lives of mediaeval and Tudor people who lived and worked here.
For the first time, the Trust is offering special free activities for children. These will include carving, learning how to spin wool and make a drop spindle, activities in the herb garden and a special discovery trail. Visitors will also have the opportunity to handle precious stone artefacts from the Priory, which have never been accessible to the public before.
Refreshments and fully accessible toilets will be available, thanks to the generosity of Southdown Sports Club.
There is limited wheelchair access to the site.
Entry to the site and starting point for the Open Afternoon tours will be at the East end of the site, by the helmet memorial, as this is convenient for the Mountfield Road (Dripping Pan) car park and for the railway station.
This is an opportunity to see the remains of the Priory at close quarters, and to hear about the history of the site from experienced guides. There will also be an opportunity to purchase publications, and to support the Priory Trust by becoming a member.
It will also be possible to visit the Gundreda Chapel in Southover Church, on Southover High Street, between 1:30 pm and 5:00 pm on the same day. In this chapel there are two lead coffins and other related artefacts relating to Gundreda and William de Warrenne.
A Herb Garden, looked-after by volunteers, may be visited at all times.
Copies of 'Lewes Priory, the Site and Its History' by Dr Helen Poole, a Lewes Priory 'Time-Line' and 'Factsheet' are available from Anne of Cleves House, 52 Southover High Street.
